Our Mission...

From the very beginning of the Christian Church was given a mission. Jesus' summed up the mission just before he ascended "Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20 The Message)  Part of the way of life we are called to go out and share is the way of giving.  Christians give our time, our talents and our money for the sake of others.

South Walpole UMC has a strong tradition of involvement in missions.  From our annual Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels, to collections of needed items for people in the area prisons, to helping our neighboring school with its annual fall fundraiser, to setting aside time to pick up trash along the side of the road.  Last month members of the Union Congregational Church in East Walpole joined some of our members on a joint mission trip to rural Maine. Just a few days ago one young high school grad gave up some of her hair to Locks for Love.  One boy from our congregation asked the guests at his birthday party to bring the toys for someone who was really in need.  Last December as news of the Tsunami reached us, another young couple organized for our church to be a drop off location for emergency supplies.  And when our congregation emphasized Imagine No Malaria with our float in the Walpole Day Parade we both raised awareness of this exciting and attainable mission of ridding Africa of this terrible disease (just $10 can save a life) and won third prize - saving 10 more lives.

I think about the fact that malaria used to be rampant in the United States. After all, we have plenty of mosquitoes. What it takes to wipe out malaria is to eliminate the source of malaria, people sick with malaria. The use of nets breaks the chain of infection.

Congratulations to South Walpole UMC for taking this initiative!
