1 Get More Familiar with the Basic Pattern Read the Book of Worship section on the Basic Pattern. Create an order of worship with the elements on page one of this document by placing them in the grid on pages 2-3. Explain why you put it there using the rubrics in the BOW and your understanding of Scripture, Tradition, Reason and Experience and "Form follows function follows faith."
2 Explore the Church Seasons Read the BOW section on the church year. Pick-out one act of worship offered in each season (Advent, Lent, Ordinary Time etc) that is unfamiliar to you. Describe it to someone in your congregation explaining how it relates to that season, what aspect of Christ it is pointing two (incarnation, resurrection, sending the Holy Spirit etc) and how it might help someone experience the work of God in their lives.
3 Learn to Use the Lectionary Find the scripture lessons for a particular date using the BOW (not a website, or other calendar). Note the liturgical season and any other significant occurrence in American life.
4. Read Wesley's Directions for Singing in the Hymnal and think how it fits with the goals of "full, active and conscious" singing.
