Why do you think Jesus uses parables to explain is teachings?

Doesn't Jesus discuss this in Chapter 4 when talking to his disciples? Being a follower of Jesus requires effort and sacrifice on a person's part. Just "seeing" or "listening" is not enough; a person needs to try to "perceive" and "understand." It seems like Jesus is worried that if people are given a plain answer, they won't strive to be a true follower of Jesus but instead just say, "Yeah, I heard him." If you care enough to try to understand the meaning behind the parable and you get it, you'll strive to be a follower of Jesus.

Great comment Bart. I once listened to a radio interview, where the interviewee commented that if God wants to talk to him, He can simply do it without using parables. I guess the interviewee thinks he superior to God.
